The federal government has been ordered by a New York Court to reply to a motion filed by Nikhil Gupta’s attorneys, who are seeking information related to allegations against him for allegedly plotting the assassination of a terrorist from Khalistanistan on American territory.
“On Januray 4, 2024, defence counsel filed a motion to compel production of discovery, requesting that the Court enter an order directing the Government to begin providing defense counsel with discovery material. The Court hereby directs the government to file a reply to the Motion to Compel within three days of the date of this order,” US District Judge Victor Marrero said in the order.
US federal prosecutors have accused Gupta of collaborating with an Indian government official in the thwarted scheme to murder dual-Canadian and US-born Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
According to United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Matthew G. Olsen, Gupta, 52, of India, has been charged with murder-for-hire, a crime that carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire.
In accordance with the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic, prosecutors said that on June 30, 2023, Czech police arrested and detained Gupta. At the behest of the United States, Gupta was detained in the Czech Republic for his involvement in the man’s murderous scheme.
