India defeated Afghanistan in a thrilling match on Wednesday, with Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh causing mayhem at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In the third and final Twenty20 International of the series, the pair broke numerous records en route to their undefeated 190-run stand. When Rinku onto the field, India was not in the best of positions having lost four batters for 22 runs. However, the pair did not lose until the conclusion of the innings, leading the team to 212 runs, with 36 runs coming in the final over to seal the victory.
While Rinku played an undefeated innings of 69 runs off 39 balls with two fours and six sixes, Rohit hammered 121 runs off 69 balls with 11 fours and eight sixes.
In their undefeated partnership of 190 runs against Afghanistan, Rohit and Rinku were formidable. Highest T20I partnership for any wicket for India are:
190* R Sharma – R Singh v Afg Bengaluru 2024
176 S Samson – D Hooda v Ire Dublin 2022
165 R Sharma – KL Rahul v SL Indore 2017
165 Y Jaiswal – S Gill v WI Lauderhill 2023
While Rohit Sharma’s 121* is the fourth-highest individual score for India in Twenty20 Internationals, it is the highest score for an Indian captain in the shortest format. Shubman Gill is at the top of the list.
126* Shubman Gill v NZ Ahmedabad 2023
123* Ruturaj Gaikwad v Aus Guwahati 2023
122* Virat Kohli v Afg Dubai 2022
121* Rohit Sharma v Afg Bengaluru 2024
After being four down for 25 or less, India scored the highest total for a team in the third Twenty20 International, reaching 212/4. The USA’s performance versus Ireland in Lauderhill in 2021 was the best before that.
212/4 Ind vs Afg Bengaluru 2024 (from 22/4)
188/6 USA vs Ire Lauderhill 2021 (from 16/4)
174/10 Philippines vs Cambodia Phnom Penh 2023 (from 23/4)
Thanks to a no-ball, Rinku Singh and Rohit Sharma’s team helped India score 36 runs in the match’s last over. The only two players who had previously scored 36 runs apiece were Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard, who scored them for the West Indies against Sri Lanka (against Akila Dananjaya at Coolidge in 2021) and India against England (against Stuart Broad in Durban in 2007).
36 Yuvraj Singh off Stuart Broad Durban 2007
36 Kieron Pollard off Akila Dananjaya Coolidge 2021
36 Rohit Sharma & Rinku Singh off Karim Janat Bengaluru 2024
Before Wednesday’s match between India and Afghanistan in Bengaluru, there has never been a double Super Over, despite more than 15 matches ending in ties since the multiple Super Over rule was implemented following the 2019 ODI World Cup final controversy.
The undefeated partnership of 190 runs between Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh is the most for any side in T20Is at the fifth wicket or less. The previous record was set at Mulpani against Hong Kong by Deependra Airee and Kushal Malla with 145 runs.
With this series victory, India has now won nine straight T20I cricket whitewash series, more than any other nation in the sport’s shortest format. Pakistan follows with eight consecutive victories.
As of right present, Rohit is the Indian skipper with the most runs scored in Twenty20 Internationals. With his 121-run knock, he surpassed Virat Kohli’s record of 1570 runs in 50 Twenty20 Internationals. At the moment, he has 1648 runs in T20Is.
After Babar Azam, Rohit is the second captain to score three century in Twenty20 Internationals while leading the team.
Rohit managed to tie MS Dhoni’s record of 42 T20I victories for India with the third T20I.
When it comes to the amount of bilateral T20I series victories for India while serving as captain, The Hitman tops the list. Twelve are in Rohit’s name.
