Voters in sixteen US states and one territory cast votes for presidential candidates on Super Tuesday, March 5, as the two fierce adversaries, Republican Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, raced towards a rematch in November’s general election. Nikki Haley, Trump’s final opponent, was looking for a reason to press on with her increasingly unlikely campaign.
The largest night of the primary campaign is almost done, but complete results won’t be known for several more hours, according to the Press. Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and the US territory of American Samoa all hosted nomination contests.
According to sources, President Joe Biden has won every Democratic election thus far with ease, including those in Alabama, Minnesota, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Vermont.
According to the Press, Republican front-runner Donald Trump has secured the support of voters in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Minnesota, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. This occurred when he attempted to disqualify opponent Nikki Haley on the most important day of the primary calendar in order to set up a rematch with Joe Biden. If elected, Trump—who regularly disparages immigrants—promises to carry out the biggest deportation operation in US history.
Despite longshot opposition from self-help author Marianne Williamson and Congressman Dean Phillips, President Joe Biden is almost expected to win his party’s nomination. Amidst a drive to register a protest ballot over the President’s backing for Israel, 13% of voters in Michigan declared themselves “uncommitted” on February 27, which was a blow to the Biden campaign.
Meanwhile, Republican front-runner Donald Trump, who has a double-digit lead in the polls, will be aiming to ultimately eliminate Haley from the race. Even though Nikki Haley has only won once in a run of nomination ballots and wealthy donors have closed their wallets, she is still in the lead. Although she has no clear path to victory, Super Tuesday may be her last chance to impede Trump’s momentum or expose his potential vulnerabilities heading into the general election.
Prior to Election Day in November, Super Tuesday is the most important day for primary elections and caucuses. Voters in sixteen states and one territory chose their presidential candidates on Tuesday. A few states also held elections to choose their own district attorneys and candidates for governor and senate. Super Tuesday is virtually always the first Tuesday in March, just as Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November.
On who they want to run for president and other posts, Democrats and Republicans cast their votes. Delegates are chosen after those votes have been counted. (Those selected as delegates to their political party’s presidential nominating convention represent their community. They choose the candidate who will stand in for them on the party ticket in November.)
In order to receive the nomination of their party, candidates must gain the majority of them. Super Tuesday is the date with the greatest number of delegates up for grabs. More over thirty-five percent, or 854 out of 2,429, of the Republican delegates are up for grabs. 1,420 delegates, or around 36% of the total, are up for grabs by Democrats.
