Election Strategy: Maharashtra Cabinet Proposes Increased Income Limit for Non-Creamy Layer

Raising the income threshold for the ‘non-creamy layer’ classification is what the Maharashtra Cabinet, headed by Eknath Shinde, chose to ask the national government to do. The plan aims to raise the existing income ceiling for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) group from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 15 lakh annually, making more people eligible for reservation benefits.

This is prior to the Maharashtra Assembly election, which is anticipated to take place before the end of the current year.

The decision, which was approved by the state cabinet on Thursday during a meeting, intends to give reservation benefits to a wider segment of the population.

In response to the growing calls for more inclusive eligibility standards for the non-creamy layer—particularly for individuals who do not fit into the economically advanced category—the Union administration has made this recommendation.

In addition, the Maharashtra Cabinet has adopted a draft law giving the Maharashtra State Scheduled Caste Commission constitutional status. In order to improve the commission’s operations, 27 positions have been approved, and the ordinance will be presented at the next legislative session.

Ahead of the Assembly elections, the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP combination in Maharashtra has taken this action.
