S. Jaishankar: Trump’s 2024 Success Highlights Global Shift Away from Globalization

S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, stated on Saturday that the results of the most recent US presidential election demonstrate the electorate’s mounting discontent with the consequences of globalisation.

Donald Trump’s triumph, according to Jaishankar, brought to light the underlying discontent among those who felt left behind by global social and economic changes.

“If the American political verdict is interpreted, it reflects the electorate’s disenchantment and unhappiness with the impact of globalisation on them,” Jaishankar said while interacting with editor-in-chief R Sukumar at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit on November 16.

To commemorate a century of outstanding journalism, dignitaries, business titans, and members of the editorial community gathered in New Delhi for the 22nd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS2024).

To commemorate the newspaper’s remarkable history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an inaugural keynote address and unveiled a commemorative stamp earlier in the day to mark the 100th anniversary of Hindustan Times. PM Modi said all those associated with Hindustan Times’ 100-year journey deserve congratulations and are worthy of appreciation.

According to Jaishankar, the Donald Trump administration will make the US more conscious of its manufacturing and economic interests. The minister clarified this by saying that technology’s nature is connected to national security.

“Today, technology and national security cannot be compartmentalised, and this is part of the digital and AI revolution,” he said adding that despite being a global power, the US needs global partners and that it cannot do everything on its own.

In the US elections held on November 5, Republican Trump defeated Democrat Kamala Harris.

According to the Union Minister, a particular model of globalisation has been implemented during the last 25 years, and the US administration under President Bill Clinton was the one that initially embraced this model.

Jaishankar added that as China has benefited the most from globalisation, it must be brought up while talking about it.
