Days after the Congress lost majority in Puducherry, BJP and its allies are also not likely to form its government in the Union Territory. Following which the Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has recommended for a President’s rule in the Territory.
Her letter of recommendation would be cleared in the cabinet meeting today, the sources said.
The Congress alliance led by the Chief Minister V Narayanswamy toppled just three months ahead of the assembly polls. The Congress led alliance fell short of majority in the floor test conducted on Monday after six members of Congress-DMK alliance resigned from the alliance. Out of those six, five were from Congress and one from DMK. Likewise what is happening in Bengal happened in Puducherry also as two out of those six had joined BJP soon after resigning from the alliance.
Following the lost in trust vote in the assembly the Chief Minister also resigned from the Position and blamed the biggest Opposition of BJP and NR Congress for toppling the government in the UT, and also alleged the former Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi for “colluding with the opposition”.
Soon after the floor test result, the NR Congress Chief denied to a question whether the BJP-NR Congress alliance will form its government, but he also said that he will consult it with his allies if the party wants to change its mind.
Although, any party who forms its government in Puducherry will only remain in power for only three months as elections are due in May.
The President accepted the resignations of Mr Narayanswamy and the other council members on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Puducherry and then Tamil Nadu tomorrow. He will address a rally there with several developmental projects in the UT. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister is also scheduled to visit Puducherry on February 28.
The rally is likely to be the BJP’s election campaign in the coastal union territory ahead of the elections.
With this collapse the Congress lost its only government in the south and this lost in power would somewhere benefit the saffron party before the election.
