There were rumors that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was intending to run for the Rajya Sabha when the AAP announced that Sanjeev Arora, a member of the Rajya Sabha, would be its candidate for the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election in Punjab. However, a senior party leader denied the claim while speaking with the news agency. “Currently there are no plans for Arvind ji going to the Rajya Sabha. He built the organisation from scratch without being an MP or MLA and he doesn’t need such a position to run the party now also,” the senior leader added.
The terms of every AAP member in the Rajya Sabha, whether from Delhi or Punjab, expire in 2028 or 2030. The BJP would benefit from a Delhi Rajya Sabha by-election because they hold the majority in the Assembly. Speaking to the news agency, AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said, “Arvind Kejriwal is not going to Rajya Sabha. As far as Arvind Kejriwal is concerned, media sources were earlier saying that he will become the Chief Minister of Punjab. Now, media sources are saying that he will contest from Rajya Sabha. Both these sources are absolutely wrong.”
In the 2025 Delhi Assembly election, AAP leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal admitted loss to BJP candidate Parvesh Verma from the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
