CBFC Greenlights Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’; Release Date to Be Announced Soon

Emergency, Kangana Ranaut’s next movie, has gotten off to a rough start. The movie, which was initially scheduled for release on September 7, experienced several delays and had trouble getting approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which objected to some of the sequences. Kangana announced on social media Thursday that the movie had finally been certified by the CBFC.

Kangana shared the update on X (formerly known as Twitter), writing, “We are glad to announce we have received the censor certificate for our movie Emergency, we will be announcing the release date soon. Thank you for your patience and support (Indian tricolour emoji).”

Kangana Ranaut plays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the movie Emergency, which is about the 21-month emergency that Indira implemented between 1975 and 1977. According to reports, Kangana, who is also the film’s director and producer, agreed to some of the censor board’s suggested edits. The actor-politician had previously claimed that threats against CBFC members were the reason the film’s clearance was “stopped.”

She wrote on X, “There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in. Death threats. The Censor Board members are getting threats. We are under pressure not to show the assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to show Bhindranwale, not to show the Punjab riots. I don’t know what will be left to show then… This is unbelievable for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in this country.”

The way Sikhs are portrayed in Emergency has sparked criticism. Sikh groups, such as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht, expressed strong disapproval of the trailer’s content.

Emergency, which also starred Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, and the late actor Satish Kaushik, was first slated for release in November 2023. Later, it was rescheduled for September 6 and then June 2024. Kangana has vowed to provide the new release date as soon as the film has been approved by the CBFC.
