Certification of Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Put on Hold Following Censor Board Threats

In a video posted on X, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut made it plain that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not approved her next movie, “Emergency.” The actor’s explanation followed reports that the censor board had approved the movie.

On September 6, 2024, “Emergency,” starring Kangana as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is slated to open in cinemas.

In the video, the actor stated that the censor board has been threatened with death over a couple of the movie’s portions. “There are certain rumors that my film ‘Emergency’ has been cleared by the censor board, but that’s not true. In fact, our film was initially cleared, but the certification has been put on hold as the censor board is receiving death threats. There is pressure being put on us to remove certain scenes, such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the Punjab riots, and more. Now, I don’t know what else to show. What are we supposed to do—blackout the film during these scenes? This is unbelievable to me, and I am deeply sorry for the current state of thinking in this country,” she said in the video.

This dispute starts with calls for the prohibition of Kangana Ranaut’s film “Emergency.” The film is likely to be banned in Telangana, where a delegation of 18 members from the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, has accused the movie of portraying the community as terrorists and anti-nationals.

According to government advisor Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has given Sikh community leaders the assurance that, subject to legal review, the state government will think about prohibiting the distribution of Kangana Ranaut’s next movie, “Emergency.”

At the moment, Kangana Ranaut is occupied with promoting “Emergency,” her upcoming drama. On September 6, the movie, which also stars Anupam Kher, will be released in theatres.
