Congress Names Rahul Gandhi Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

Congress national secretary KC Venugopal has announced that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been designated as the LoP in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi, a member of Congress, was earlier observed departing from party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s Delhi home following his attendance at the INDIA bloc floor leaders’ meeting.

Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab has received a letter informing Congressman Rahul Gandhi of his decision to take over as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi’s selection as the Leader of Opposition was decided upon following a meeting of the INDIA bloc floor leaders at the home of Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge.

“Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson (Sonia Gandhi) wrote to Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, informing him of the decision to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha,” senior party leader KC Venugopal told reporters after the meeting. He said the decision on other appointments will be decided later.

Rahul Gandhi now serves as the Lok Sabha representative for the Rae Bareli seat. He has served as an MP for five terms. On Tuesday, he was sworn in as an MP while clutching a copy of the Constitution. After a ten-year lapse, the Congress, the only opposition party with the majority, is appointed opposition leader.

In the previous two elections, it has been unable to gain the ten percent of Lok Sabha MPs necessary to win the seat.
