India’s Covid Fatality May Peak In Mid-May With Over 5,000 Deaths Every Day, Says IHME Study

An American study based on ‘Covid-19 projections’ has cautioned that deaths due to Covid in India may peak in mid-May with 5,600 deaths every day.

This alone may lead to around 3 lakh deaths between the period of April and August.

The study was conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. The study pinned all hope on India’s nationwide vaccination drive to get over the deadlier second wave of the disease.

The IHME experts also warned that the situation of the pandemic is going to be worse in the upcoming few weeks in India.

The exact figures anticipated in study says that the daily Covid deaths will peak at 5,600 on May 10, this year. The total deaths projected from April 12 to August 1 stands at 3,29.000 and the cumulative deaths by the end of July as per the study counts to 6,65,000.

The study also projected that the figure may reduce by 70,000 if people sincerely follow wearing of mask.

The daily tally of fresh cases have mounted by 71 per cent between the first and second week of April and the daily deaths by 55 per cent due to full negligence to the Covid-appropriate behaviour that is wearing of mask, social distancing, washing hands etc.

IHME experts have also confirmed that Covid-19 has become the fifth major cause of deaths in India now.

The study also says that the estimated percentage of population that has contracted the disease by the April 12 of this year is 24.

Meanwhile, these experts have shown a great confidence in the vaccines approved by India as they say, about 85,600 lives can be saved solely through the nationwide vaccination drive in the country.
