India’s Stellar Performance Sends England Packing, Enters T20 World Cup Final

Following a half-century from captain Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel spearheaded the demolition of England, enabling India to win the semi-final by 68 runs and go to the 2024 T20 World Cup final. They will play South Africa in the championship match on Saturday at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

India reached a score of 171/7 in 20 overs, once again spearheaded by Rohit. England lost half of their team before they turned fifty. Jos Buttler gave Axar Patel the breakthrough in the fourth over, and he went on to capture a wicket off the first ball of his next two overs. He dismissed England players Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali, while in the fifth over Jasprit Bumrah sent Phil Salt back. With the dismissal of Sam Curran in the ninth over, Kuldeep also contributed to the wicket total.

Prior to this, in a 73-run partnership with Suryakumar that ended in just 50 balls, Rohit struck 57 in 39 balls. The two had to get used to having their innings cut short by an extended weather delay that exceeded sixty minutes.

The two got off to a slow start after the break. After reaching his half-century, Rohit was bowled out in the 14th over by Adil Rashid. After racing ahead, Suryakumar was dismissed in the 16th over, 47 off 36 balls, by Jofra Archer. Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel then smashed away and got India past 170, with 160 usually being the par score at the Providence Stadium.

Earlier in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final at Providence Stadium in Guyana, Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to bowl first, sending India to bat. Rain was falling in Georgetown, delaying Toss by almost an hour and a half. In the third over of the game, Virat Kohli fell for just nine runs, continuing his poor run. India finished the powerplay with a score of 46/2 after losing another wicket to Rishabh Pant. Rain arrived in the eighth over, forcing Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav off the pitch just as they were beginning to look good. The score at the time of the pause was 65/2 for India.
