According to BCCI secretary Jay Shah, two names have been shortlisted for the top position, and the Indian cricket team will have a new head coach by the end of July. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed potential candidates last month, including WV Raman and Gautam Gambhir.
The recent 2024 T20 World Cup saw India win the trophy, marking the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure. However, the new coach won’t take over until after India plays a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka later this month.
Before that, a team from India, captained by Shubman Gill, will play Zimbabwe in a five-game bilateral T20I series that begins later this week. However, foe the Zimbabwe tour, VVS Laxman, the current director of the National Cricket Academy, will be in charge.
“Both coach and selector appointment will be made shortly,” Shah was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. “CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series.”
Dravid ended his career on a triumphant note, leading the Indian squad captained by Rohit Sharma to victory over South Africa in a thrilling Barbados final. Along with Dravid’s career coming to an end, Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja also announced that it was their final Twenty20 international match for India.
Several well-known individuals, including Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming, and Justin Langer, were rumoured to be in the running to replace Dravid. Gambhir, a two-time world cup winner, will almost certainly be chosen the team’s next head coach.
Due to his impressive tenure as the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) coach during the IPL 2024, when the team won the championship in a dominant manner, Gambhir’s stock increased.
Before that, he coached the Lucknow Super Giants for two seasons, during which the team made it to the playoffs both times.
