Maha Kumbh Stampede Sparks Immediate Measures, VVIP Passes Canceled, Vehicle Restrictions Enforced

The state administration has put in place stringent safeguards to stop further tragedies after a pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam region of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, left 30 people dead and 60 injured. Declaring the entire fair area a No-Vehicle Zone is one of the five significant modifications the government has made.

On Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days of the Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims tried to reach the waters for a sacred dip on Wednesday, when the tragedy happened. Vaibhav Krishna, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Maha Kumbh, stated that pilgrims pressing against barricades in an effort to get to the sacred waters caused the rush.

The five main improvements are as follow: It is definitely forbidden for any kind of vehicle to enter the Maha Kumbh fair area. Vehicle access will not be permitted with any special passes, thus there will be no exceptions. To make it easier for devotees to move around, a one-way traffic system has been implemented. To ease traffic, cars coming from Prayagraj’s neighboring districts are being stopped at the district boundaries. To preserve order, four-wheeler entry into the city is strictly prohibited until this day.

IAS officers Ashish Goyal and Bhanu Goswami have been instructed to arrive in Prayagraj right away in order to bolster crowd control measures. Together with Vijay Kiran, both bureaucrats were instrumental in the effective administration of the 2019 Ardh Kumbh.

Five special secretary-rank officers who have managed major events before have also been assigned to help with Maha Kumbh activities.

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, released a number of directives after the stampede that addressed interdepartmental cooperation, traffic management, and crowd control. The Chief Minister directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Secretary to assess the Maha Kumbh arrangements.

The Prayagraj District Magistrate and the ADG have been instructed to make sure that every devotee leaves the city safely and without incident. Mr. Adityanath spoke to senior police officers and officials from several districts, including Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mirzapur, Basti, Jaunpur, and Rae Bareli, during a late-night video conference.

Mr. Adityanath gave officials instructions to work closely with rail authorities because there were many devotees waiting to return home at railway stations throughout Prayagraj. To handle the rush, the Transport Corporation has been instructed to send out more buses.

To control crowd pressure within the fair area, holding areas have been erected at border crossings. Only when circumstances allow will devotees be let to continue. The state administration has promised that there will be sufficient provisions for food, potable water, and a steady supply of energy in these locations.

Major highways from Ayodhya, Kanpur, Fatehpur, Lucknow, Pratapgarh, and Varanasi that lead to Prayagraj have been ordered to have more patrols and more efficient traffic flow.

A three-member judicial commission has been appointed to investigate the causes of the stampede. The panel comprises Justice Harsh Kumar, former Director General VK Gupta, and retired IAS officer VK Singh. In addition to the judicial probe, the Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of those who died.
