Mixed Reception for ‘Indian 2’, Kamal Haasan’s Sequel Garners Rs 26 Crore on Opening Day

The much-anticipated Indian 2, the follow-up to “Ulaganayagan,” starring Kamal Haasan, was finally launched in Indian theatres on Friday. Despite the movie’s successful box office opening, particularly in Tamil Nadu, it received unfavourable reviews from reviewers and viewers, which may be reason for concern. Industry tracker Sacnilk reports that on its first day of release, Indian 2 grossed Rs 26 crore nett throughout India, with Rs 17 crore coming from the Tamil version, Rs 1.1 crore from the Hindi version, and Rs 7.9 crore from the Telugu version.

The opening day receipts of Indian 2, which made Rs 26 crore, are just slightly less than the Rs 28 crore collected by Kamal Haasan’s last film, the blockbuster Vikram, in 2022. In contrast to Indian 2, Vikram garnered favourable reviews and went on to become the highest-earning movie for the actor, grossing over Rs 430 crore globally in its lifespan. The latest movie Kamal Haasan starred in was Vishwaroopam II (2018), which did not do well at the box office.

The 1996 hit movie Indian, which also starred Urmila Matondkar and Manisha Koirala, has a sequel called Indian 2. Indian, a vigilante action film starring Kamal Haasan as the now-famous Senapathy, was well received. In the sequel, which had a challenging production and resulted in the deaths of several crew members, he plays the same character. The film has received universal negative reviews, which puts the forthcoming Indian 3 in jeopardy.

The majority of interest in Indian 2 came from its night shows, with the Tamil version seeing an overall 55% occupancy rate, according to news agency. 68% occupancy was observed in Chennai. The occupancy rate for Hindi was a meagre 11%, while the occupancy rates for Mumbai and Delhi-NCR were 12.5% and 8%, respectively. The Telugu version of the movie did better, with 58% occupancy. Indian 2 was released in Telugu as Bharateeyudu 2 and in Hindi as Hindustani 2. Recently, Kamal Haasan starred in the global box office success of Kalki 2898 AD, which grossed over Rs 900 crore. Thug Life is another project he’s working on.
