Nagpur Authorities Begin Demolition of Fahim Khan’s Allegedly Illegal Property Amid Violence Fallout

After he disregarded a 24-hour civic ultimatum to demolish the alleged unlawful building, the demolition campaign at the home of Fahim Khan, the suspected mastermind of the Nagpur riots who is currently in detention, began today.

Fahim Khan’s double-story home in Sanjay Bagh Colony will be demolished by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, marking the first time the civic body has destroyed the property of a riot suspect. According to reports, Fahim Khan’s family has encroached on certain Municipal Corporation property.

This comes two days after CM Devendra Fadnavis asserted that “bulldozers will run if the law permits”. He was answering a question on whether his Mahayuti government, which is governed by the BJP, will administer justice in the same way as UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. After inspecting the property on March 20, NMC inspectors declared that it was in violation of the 1966 Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.

After an investigation revealed that two stores were being utilized by rioters associated with Khan’s Minority Democratic Party (MDP), Nagpur police closed them earlier on Saturday. A day after Chief Minister Fadnavis claimed that 80% of the city was unscathed by the violence on March 17, curfews were lifted Sunday from riot-affected regions following a nearly week-long period of unrest.

The Aurangzeb’s grave row caused violence in Nagpur. 40 people were hurt in Nagpur when two groups fought after a holy scripture was allegedly set on fire. On Saturday, one of them passed away from his wounds.
