Omar Abdullah Set to Be Sworn In Today, Marking J&K’s First Elected Government in 10 Years

After his National Conference (NC) party won the first Assembly election in the area since Article 370 was repealed, Omar Abdullah is scheduled to take the oath of office as the first chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir since it became a Union Territory.

According to officials cited by the news agency, the chief minister and his council of ministers will be sworn in today at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).

Kashmir and Jammu At 11:30 a.m., Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will conduct Omar Abdullah and his ministers’ oath-taking ceremony.

The NC leader told reporters in Srinagar that “we have a lot to do” and promised that his government would listen to the union territory’s residents’ complaints.

“We have to give people the hope that this is their government, and they will be heard. They were not being heard for the last 5-6 years. It will be our responsibility to listen to them and act on it,” he added.

Leaders of the INDIA alliance have been invited by the NC to the event today. Prominent members of the INDIA group, including as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Lok Sabha Leader Rahul Gandhi, have received invitations to the swearing-in ceremony. Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Lalu Prasad Yadav of the RJD, M K Stalin of the DMK, and NCP President Sharad Pawar are all anticipated to attend. The Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and the AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal are among the other important invitees.

Nasir Aslam Wani, the provincial president of the National Conference (NC) in Kashmir, claims that it is unclear who would be present at the ceremony.

Omar Abdullah was called to take the oath of office as the chief minister of J&K by Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday. The invitation was sent the day after the Union Territory’s government removed the president’s authority.

In a letter addressed to Omar Abdullah, Sinha said, “I have received a letter of 11th October 2024 from Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, wherein it has been informed that you have been unanimously elected as Leader of the Legislature Party.”

In preparation for his second term as Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the National Conference (NC) Legislature Party on Thursday. His first term, which lasted from 2009 to 2014, was during an NC-Congress coalition administration when Jammu & Kashmir was still a fully fledged state.

The NC won 42 of the 90 seats in the most recent elections, while the Congress took home six. Five members will be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, giving the two pre-poll allies a majority in the 95-member legislature.

Their majority is further strengthened by the backing of five Independent MLAs-elect and one MLA-elect from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
