Referring to a film about the Godhra train burning tragedy in 2002, when he was Gujarat’s chief minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday that a false story can only last so long.
Modi made the comments on X, reacting to a user’s post praising the movie “The Sabarmati Report” for “bringing out the important truth of one of the most shameful events in our recent history”.
In addition, the user asserted that a vested-interest organisation used the “brutal burning of passengers” on the Sabarmati Express train as a political minefield in order to damage the reputation of “one leader,” who was presumably Modi.
The prime minister said, “Well said. It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it.”
“A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!” he added.
A Muslim mob was accused by the Gujarat Police of setting fire to the train carrying many pilgrims returning from Ayodhya, although there were also reports that it was an accident.
Gujarat saw communal riots after the fire, which claimed the lives of over fifty passengers.
The accident explanation was backed by an investigation team headed by former railway minister Lalu Prasad, who was a part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration at the centre.
However, courts found many of the accused who were charged with putting the train on fire guilty, supporting the state police’s claim.
