At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 49 runs in match 33 of the IPL 2023. Jason Roy (61) and Rinku Singh (53*) both scored half-centuries as KKR chased a total of 236 but only managed to reach 186/8 in 20 overs. For CSK, Maheesh Theekshana and Tushar Deshpande both claimed two wickets. With the help of half-centuries from Ajinkya Rahane, Devon Conway, and Shivam Dube, CSK first reached 235/4 in 20 overs. Rahane smashed an unbeaten 71 runs off 29 balls, including six fours and five sixes, to complete an unbeaten innings. Conway, on the other hand, pounded out 56 runs off of 40 deliveries, including four fours and three maximums. Dube, who was also in excellent form, scored 50 runs off 21 balls while smashing two fours and five maximums. Suyash Sharma, Varun Chakravarthy, and Kulwant Khejroliya each claimed a dismissal for CSK’s bowling unit.
In order to compile the large total, CSK’s top order ran most of the KKR bowlers out of the game. Suyash Sharma, a young leg-spinner, was KKR’s lone successful bowler (2/29 from 4 overs). In their 20 overs of chasing, KKR could only reach 186 for eight.
Despite Jason Roy’s lightning-quick 26-ball 61 and Rinku Singh’s undefeated 33-ball 53, it was not enough to reach the enormous mark. Tushar Deshpande (2/43) and Maheesh Theekshana (2/32) both took two wickets for CSK.
