Rahul Gandhi Calls on PM Modi to Visit Manipur Amid Ethnic Violence, Offers Support

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, requested on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit Manipur in order to provide comfort to the people of the state who have been affected by ethnic violence. The Congress MP declared that his organisation will use every effort to establish peace in Manipur. Gandhi referred to the Manipur tragedy as “tremendous” at an Imphal press conference.

“The Prime Minister should visit the state and listen to the woes of the people as it would give comfort to them,” urged Gandhi.

He stated that he came to the state to learn about the pain endured by victims of abuse and to offer them hope. “We’ll exert every effort to restore harmony to Manipur… I’ve been attempting to exert pressure on the government as a member of the opposition,” he added.

Gandhi visited some of the relief camps in the northeast of the state that were sheltering people displaced by ethnic conflict. In the battle, more than 200 individuals have died since May of last year. While in the state on Monday, the governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, received a visit from the Lok Sabha LoP.

The Congress leader met with Uikey at Raj Bhavan in the evening after touring numerous relief camps and speaking with victims of ethnic violence.

Gandhi is making his third trip to the state since racial unrest broke out in May of last year. The former president of Congress had visited various relief shelters earlier in the day.

Refugees from the ethnic violence that has killed over 200 people in the northeastern state since May of last year are being housed in those camps.
