Roof Collapse at Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Leaves One Dead, Six Injured; Operations Suspended

Heavy rain this morning caused a section of the roof of Delhi airport’s Terminal-1 (T1) to collapse on automobiles, inflicting six injuries and at least one fatality. According to the civil aviation ministry, all departures from Terminal 1, which only operates domestic flights, have been temporarily halted.

“Heavy rain in early morning today has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi airport Terminal 1. As a result of which, flights to and from Terminal 1 have been closed till further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for smooth operation of the flights,” the ministry said in a post on X.

During his visit to the airport, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu examined Terminal 1. According to him, Terminals 2 and 3 would temporarily host the airport’s activities.

He described it as a “very serious incident” and said the victim’s family would receive ₹ 20 lakh in compensation. Additionally, the recently elected minister declared that each of the harmed parties will receive ₹ 3 lakh.

Only IndiGo and SpiceJet operate domestic flights on T1. The airport has three terminals, T1, T2 and T3, and handles around 1,400 flight movements daily.

Four automobiles that were parked in the pick-up and drop section of the terminal at the busiest airport in the world, Indira Gandhi International Airport, were damaged by the fall of the roof sheet and support beams, according to the officials. At about 5:30 in the morning, the incident was reported to Delhi Fire Services (DFS).

A man was observed being removed from a car where an iron beam had fallen during the rescue efforts.

According to IndiGo, Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport sustained structural damage, which affected its ability to operate flights. According to a statement from the budget airline, “passengers are not able to enter the terminal,” which has resulted in flight cancellations in Delhi.

“Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives,” an IndiGo spokesperson said.

“This unplanned situation has also led to operations across the network being impacted. Customers are advised to keep track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport,” the statement added.

Spicejet also cancelled its flights until further notice.

“Please keep a watch on our Social Media channels for further updates,” the airline told its passengers.
