Veteran Singer Bhupinder Singh Passes Away At 82 Due To Colon Cancer And Covid Complications

Bhupinder Singh, a singer-composer best known for singing timeless songs like “Naam Gum Jayega” and “Dil Dhoondta Hai,” passed suddenly on Monday night at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 82. His funeral took place after midnight. His wife Mitali Singh said that he passed away at Criticare Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai, from suspected colon cancer and COVID-19-related complications.

The singer gained notoriety for songs like “Do Diwane Shehar Mein,” “Ek Akela is Shehar Mein,” “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasman,” “Duniya Chhute Yaar Na Chhute,” and “Karoge Yaad Toh,” among others, over the course of his decades-long career in the film industry.

After midnight, his final rituals were conducted at Oshiwara Electric Cremation. “At 7:45 this evening, Bhupendra Singhji departed for his heavenly home. He has been ill for the past six months. Bhupinder Singh collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music business during the course of his five-decade career, including Mohammed Rafi, RD Burman, Madan Mohan, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Gulzar, and Bappi Lahiri. Bhupinder Singh began his career as a musician and performer for All India Radio in Delhi. He was summoned to Mumbai after being noticed by composer Madan Mohan at one of the All India Radio events.

With Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood, and Manna Dey, he made his Bollywood singing debut in the 1964 Chetan Anand film “Haqeeqat,” which featured the Mohan composition “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga.” Two years later, “Rut Jawan Jawan Raat Mehrbaan” from the Khayyam-composed feature film “Aakhri Khat” became Bhupinder Singh’s debut solo song.

After getting married to singer Mitali in the 1980s, he stepped away from active playback singing. The pair frequently worked together and created personal records. Bhupinder Singh not only performed playback singing, but he also played guitar on a number of well-known songs, including “Dum Maaro Dum,” “Chura Liya Hai,” “Chingari Koi Bhadke,” and “Mehbooba O Mehbooba.”
