The newly released movie Vettaiyan, starring superstars Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, has the second-biggest opening weekend of any Tamil film in 2024. But the TJ Gnanavel-directed movie fell short of Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time, or GOAT. Based on preliminary trade data, Vettaiyan is expected to witness a rise in volume over the next three days as it leverages the Dussehra holidays. On its first day of release in theatres, Vettaiyan brought in almost Rs 30 crore (nett) at the domestic box office.
On October 10, Vettaiyan debuted in theatres to much fanfare. Reports on the movie, which aimed to showcase Rajinikanth and TJ Gnanavel at their best, were conflicting.
According to reports, the action drama that addressed extrajudicial killings and educational scams made Rs 30 crore net in India. The Tamil version made the most contribution, taking in Rs 26.15 crore on its first day of release. While the Hindi and Kannada versions made Rs 60 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, respectively, the Telugu version brought in Rs 3.2 crore.
With GOAT being the top opener, Vettaiyan emerged as the second-biggest opening in Tamil cinema this year. On Day 1, GOAT made about Rs 44 crore nett in India, while Vettaiyan earned only Rs 30 crore (nett). In addition to the Indian market, Vettaiyan made its debut as the top product in Malaysia and Singapore.
TJ Gnanavel directed the action drama Vettaiyan. In key parts in the movie are Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Ritika Singh, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, Dushara Vijayan, and Abhirami. Screenplay for the movie is co-written by B Kiruthika and Gnanavel.
Anirudh Ravichander is the film’s composer, and Sun Pictures is financing it. The technical team includes editor Philomin Raj and cinematographer SR Kathir.
