Following the intensification of a low-pressure region over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent east Equatorial Indian Ocean, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. This low pressure system is over the Southwest and adjacent Southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the IMD, and it is predicted to move west-northwest towards the shores of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in the coming day. Additionally, an upper air cyclonic circulation that reaches mid-tropospheric levels is present along with the low-pressure.
Over the next few days, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are predicted to get heavy to extremely heavy rains, according to weather office updates. The IMD predicted heavy rainfall in districts such as Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, and Ramanathapuram, with isolated areas likely to experience severe downpours. Heavy rain is also anticipated in interior and coastal areas, such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram.
Residents in impacted areas were advised by the IMD to remain vigilant, refrain from needless travel, and pay close attention to updates as the system develops. In order to limit disturbances and guarantee public safety, authorities have been requested to take preventative action.
Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Puducherry, and Karaikal are among the 17 districts that have been placed under a yellow alert by the IMD.
Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchirappalli are expected to see heavy rainfall. The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Chennai are among the other districts that are still under a yellow alert due to possible flooding and disturbances.
In addition, 11 districts—including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Kallakurichi—as well as Puducherry—are expected to get significant rainfall. According to the weather office, Tamil Nadu is predicted to see heavy rains through December 16.
